Iwatani Corporation of America ZA-3HP Portable Butane Stove Burner Review

This ZA-3HP is a single, portable, butane powered stove that can be the perfect companion if you are away from home or travel a lot without any electrics. Lets have a look at the features…

Features of the Iwatani ZA-3HP

  • Increased Fuel Efficiency
  • Automatic Safety Stop
  • Carrying Case
  • HIGH POWER 12,000 BTU/h
  • CSA Commercial Indoor Approved

This Iwatani ZA-3HP is approved for indoor and outdoor use and is powered by canisters of butane gas that can be bought easily in the correct size from stores or from Amazon.com. For each canister you can get around 1.5 – 2 hours of cooking time which is dependent on whether you are using it at full power or at a simmer.

This butane burner comes in it’s own carrying case which lets you carry and store you burner safely. The size of the unit is 14 x 11 x 4.2 inches and consists of a single burner and a butane gas canister holder in the side. This makes it very easy to attach the canister because it is laid into place with the cutout guide on the canister below the flange which is the receiving guide sticking out of the pressure sensor device. There is a cartridge fix lever to the left of the on/off control knob and once the canister has been placed in position this lever is pushed down to the set position and the canister is installed.

There is a heat plate underneath the gas canister on the Iwatani which helps keep the pressure level as the fuel is being consumed, giving a maximum and consistent output of gas to the burner and is allows full usage of all of the gas without leaving any in the canisters. There is also a safety stop feature which will cut off the gas if the pressure in the canisters goes up abnormally for any reason. You would then need to assess what the reason was that caused it, remove the fuel canisters then you can reset the mechanism.

The unit has a built in drip pan which is easy to clean and there are 4 pan supports which are a good size and can handle smaller camping style pans and kettles and can also handle standard size pots and pans too. The recommended largest size is around 10 inches which will not overlap the cooker much. The pans are quite steady on these supports which is what you need when cooking.

On this Iwatani ZA-3HP there is an automatic ignition which is great as you don’t have to have matches or a lighter at hand, this is worked just by turning the control knob to the on position till you hear it clicking and when it has lit the gas you can then adjust the knob to the level of heat you require.

Once you have finished cooking and you turn it off, you should move the cartridge fix lever to the off position and remove the canister till it is required again. Store it safely in a cool place.

As with any type of gas fuelled stove there are safety requirements and this ZA-3HP is no different. You can use this stove indoors but it needs to be in a ventilated area. The canisters of gas need to be stored in a cool place and not in direct sunlight. Don’t use the stove for heating your living area, it has a naked flame so should only be used for cooking.

This type of single burner is often used in restaurants when cooking foods at the table and can be used that way at home if you are having a special dinner party, but for most people they have this as a spare gas burner in case of power cuts, as a spare at holiday times when families do more cooking and need an extra burner. A lot of people take this type of butane burner with them if they have a camper van or are going camping and electricity isn’t always available, the size and portability make it easy to use outdoors.

Customer Opinion

Most customers were looking for a good quality stove that was a reasonable price and gave a steady flame and they were all happy that this Iwatani stove could satisfy those requirements. Buyers have used this for camping and some have taken it fishing and found it worked well in both areas. Customers have found that this stove setup gives a consistent flame right up until the gas is empty and then very easy to change the cannisters.

Negatives found are some people could not get the ignition to light the flame, some people had problems getting the gas cannister to load correctly and some people found it was too expensive for what you get.

Verdict

If you want a cooker that is easy to use, easy to buy fuel for and sturdy enough to carry around with you if you are travelling then this Iwatani Corporation of America ZA-3HP Portable Butane Stove Burner can definitely fit the bill. If you have access to electricity you might want to review the Cusimax 1500W Electric Countertop Burner as it is similar in size. If you need to have a gas fuelled burner and a single is big enough for your needs then check out the Iwatani ZA-3HP, I’m sure it will work for your needs.
